Super Mario Galaxy (スーパーマリオギャラクシー) is a 3-D video game which was released on November 12, 2007 on the Wii. It is a game in the Mario series, and the third game on a console which sees him in a 3-dimensional perceptive, after Super Mario 64, which was released for the Nintendo 64, and Super Mario Sunshine, released for the Nintendo GameCube. The game was very successful, both commercially and critically, and holds a 97 out of 100 on Metacritic. It has sold over 8 million copies worldwide. It has a sequel called Super Mario Galaxy 2 also for the Wii.

In the Super Smash Flash series

In Super Smash Flash 2, Mario's down special move, Mario Tornado, vaguely resembles the Star Spin technique that he first uses in this game. Like with the Star Spin, stardust covers Mario's hands as he spins, and the Baby Luma comes out of Mario's cap for a moment after the final hit.

In SSF2, the stage Galaxy Tours is based on the variety of galaxies that Mario explores in this game. Although the main layout of the stage is the Starship Mario from Super Mario Galaxy 2, the stage transitions to several galaxies that appear in this game, including Good Egg Galaxy, Freezeflame Galaxy, and Toy Time Galaxy. While aesthetically similar, the main difference between this stage and the original game's galaxies is that the stages will be affected by gravity, so characters will fall.
