This article is about Yoshi's Island based in Super Smash Bros.. For the Super Smash Flash 2 incarnation, see Yoshi's Island.

Super Happy Tree (スーパーしあわせのツリー), initially named Yoshi's Story (ヨッシーアイランド) and later Yoshi's Island (64), is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2. It is one of Yoshi's home stages, coming from the original Super Smash Bros. game. It was first introduced in version 0.8a, but was removed in v0.9a to make room for Yoshi's Story from Super Smash Bros. Melee. The stage has since returned in Beta with updated sprites by popular demand.

Layout[]

Super Happy Tree primarily consists of four platforms with a cardboard appearance. The main platform takes the shape of a large open book that slants downward toward the center on both sides. There are three soft platforms that hover above it in a pyramid formation, with the lower two platforms sloping slightly inward and the top platform being flat with a slightly raised right side. Goonies can also be seen flying in the background.

With hazards turned on, there are three soft cloud platforms that appear around the stage. The left side contains one and the right side contains two, which are arranged with a high one close to the main platforms and a low one farther right. Standing on a cloud platform for a total of three seconds causes it to briefly blink before disappearing, and it later reappears after ten seconds. Additionally, Propeller Shy Guys occasionally fly across the stage, with each carrying a single piece of Food (if it is enabled in the item switch). Attacking them makes them to drop the Food they are carrying and turn around, and dealing 11% damage total defeats them.

With hazards turned off, the cloud platforms and Propeller Shy Guys do not appear. Additionally, the left and right blast lines are brought closer to the main platforms to account for the lack of clouds.

Tournament Legality[]

Super Happy Tree is currently banned in competitive play. The stage itself is small and has close blast zones. While this would not alone ban the stage, the stage is similar to Yoshi's Story, which is slightly bigger. Thus the community has decided to ban this stage.

Origin[]

Super Happy Tree (origin)

The Super Happy Tree in the opening of Yoshi's Story.

The Super Happy Tree is a tree in Yoshi's Story that is said to be the ultimate source of happiness for the Yoshis on Yoshi's Island. It grows every type of fruit available on the island, including the magical Heart Fruit, which serves as its centerpiece. In the opening of the game, Baby Bowser steals the Super Happy Tree out of jealously and casts a spell to turn Yoshi's Island into a pop-up storybook, leading a group of newly hatched Baby Yoshis to set out to find it.

The stage in SSF2, much like its Super Smash Bros. counterpart, is based on the storybook setting and visuals of Yoshi's Story. Particularly, it draws from visuals found in the first world of the game, including the cardboard appearance of the first level and the cloth-like and fabric appearance of the second and third levels, with the sky being similar to the world's map screen. Various level elements from throughout the game also appear across the stage, including clouds that can be used as temporary platforms, Message Blocks that give hints when hit, and Goonies and Shy Guys that can appear as enemies.

Trivia[]

  • With hazards turned off, the stage resembles its variant in the 1P Game of Super Smash Bros., referred to as "SYoshi" internally.
  • Prior to Beta 1.1, the cloud platforms would reset their timers to disappear upon players coming off of them, much like they do in Super Smash Bros., which would allow players to camp by repeatedly jumping and landing on them without them disappearing.
