Rainbow Route (レインボールート), formerly titled Mirror Chamber, is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 hailing from the universe series. It is based on the primary location from Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.

Layout[]

Rainbow Route consists of a large main platform with three soft platforms floating above it in a reverse pyramid formation. There are six mirrors across the stage, including one on each side of the main platform, one on each of the three soft platforms, and the Dimension Mirror floating at the top of the stage.

With hazards turned on, the doors to the mirrors on the platforms periodically open, with one opening approximately every twelve seconds. Upon making contact with an open mirror, a player vanishes into it as it closes and then reappears at the Dimension Mirror, which briefly opens and closes. If the player is airborne when they enter a mirror, then they will be helpless upon reappearing.

Music[]

  • The main music track is the self-titled Rainbow Route, a chiptune orchestral remix of Nature Area, the theme that plays on one of the first levels in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
  • One of the alternate music tracks is Speed Eaters, a cheerful remix of the theme that plays in the sub-game of the same name in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror.
  • The other alternate music track is Triple Deluxe Medley, a synthetic medley of five remixed songs from Kirby: Triple Deluxe: Floral Fields, Bouncing Boss Battle, Fatal Blooms in Moonlight, Sullied Grace, and The World to Win.

Tournament legality[]

This stage is currently a counterpick in competitive play. Its legality has fluctuated over time between being a counterpick stage and banned; as more characters with long or disjointed range rose to prominence, many players decided that the stage was more favored towards these types of characters. The floating platform in the center gives any player who is underneath it complete control over the stage. The stage itself is also rather large with small blast zones, giving a further advantage to characters with strong onstage presence, bad recovery, and high knockback.

Origin[]

Rainbow Route is a central location in Kirby & The Amazing Mirror located at the heart of Mirror World, a dimension parallel to Dream Land. It primarily consists of a large forest with a cloud-covered area in the center called the Central Circle, which contains mirrors linking the area to other parts of the world, with the most notable of these being the Dimension Mirror, which connects the Mirror World to Dream Land. In the game, Kirby first reaches this area after being split into four by Dark Meta Knight, who traps Meta Knight inside the Dimension Mirror and shatters it into shards spread throughout the world. Kirby then ventures off to find the broken shards and restore the Dimension Mirror, with Central Circle serving as a hub that Kirby can return to at any time and access different areas as their respective mirrors appear.

The stage in SSF2 takes place in the Central Circle. The main platform is based on the one that contains the mirror leading to the start of Rainbow Route's forest, whereas the soft platforms are based on platforms that appear in the introduction stage that serves as the first area of the game. The five mirrors that appear across the platforms are based on other mirrors that appear in Central Circle; from left to right, these mirrors are named Ruins Entrance (遺跡入口), Copy Room (コピーの部屋), High Mountain (高山), Space (宇宙), and Southern Island (南の島). However, the ability to open and close is exclusive to the Dimension Mirror, which remains closed for as long as it is broken or when Kirby is not nearby. The hazard of transporting characters from one mirror to the Dimension Mirror is based on the open, interconnected world of Kirby & The Amazing Mirror, though the Dimension Mirror in-game is a one-way entrance whose area does not directly connect with the rest of Mirror World.

Trivia[]

  • This stage bears a heavy resemblance to Super Smash Flash's Kirby Hub Room, due to both stages taking place in different cloudy areas of Rainbow Route, namely the Central Circle and the Copy Ability Testing Room, respectively.
