PAC-MAZE (パックメイズ) is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2. It hails from the PAC-MAN series and is mostly based on the stage of the same name from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. It was first revealed at Super Smash Con 2016 during the Day 1 live stream and later released in Beta.

Layout[]

Going down and down and down

Yoshi warping through the bottom blast line without getting KO'd when hazards are turned on.

PAC-MAZE consists of various platforms spanning a tall height, with the main platform at the bottom being completely flat. There is a soft platform floating above each side of it, as well as a hard platform in the center of the stage with a shorter length than the bottom platform and a small wall hanging from the bottom. Three soft platforms float above this, which are longer than the soft platforms below and arranged in a pyramid formation. The background depicts the ghosts Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde traversing through Pac-Dots, with the platforms being oriented to appear as walls for them.

With hazards turned on, touching a blast line will normally transport the player to the blast line on the opposite side of the screen. In order for a player to be KO'd, they must be under the effects of knockback and hitstun when making contact with a blast line, requiring opponents to hard enough to launch them that far. Additionally, the camera is zoomed out to show the full stage at all times.

Music[]

  • The main music track is Pac-Man Theme, a funky remix of the startup theme from PAC-MAN.
  • The alternate music track is Ghostly Garden, a remix of the theme of the first level of Toc-Man's Mansion in PAC-MAN WORLD.

Tournament legality[]

This stage is banned in competitive play. With hazards on, characters can fall eternally leading to extreme camping. With hazards off, the stage is still too big, especially vertically.

Origin[]

PAC-MAZE (origin)

The maze in the arcade version of PAC-MAN.

PAC-MAZE is based on the maze where the original PAC-MAN takes place. In this game, PAC-MAN must navigate around the blue walls and collect all Pac-Dots throughout the maze while avoiding the ghosts Inky, Blinky, Pinky, and Clyde, who emerge from a "door" in the center of the maze and traverse it with their own unique patterns. When all dots are collected, the player advances to the next level, which uses the same maze layout with faster speeds and a different Bonus Fruit.

The stage in SSF2 does not directly recreate the maze's layout, though the platform in the center resembles the T-shaped walls found throughout it. The hard platforms are visually based on most of the walls throughout the maze, whereas the soft platforms are based on the "door" that ghosts emerge from. The hazard of wrapping from one blast line to another is based on the "warp tunnels" on the left and right sides of the maze, which transport PAC-MAN or the ghosts to the opposite tunnel when entered. The camera showing the full stage also references how the arcade game always shows the full maze without changing in perspective.

Trivia[]

  • PAC-MAZE and Bomb Factory are the only stages to have the camera always be zoomed out with hazards enabled.
  • Despite the stage being based on the stage of the same name from Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS, which features an identical platform layout, developers officially consider the stage an "original" stage entry rather than a past stage. This is likely due to the stages having completely different hazards, with the official stage allowing fighters to collect Pac-Dots, Power Pellets, and Bonus Fruits as power-ups while avoiding Ghosts throughout the stage.
