An opening movie, also known as an opening, intro movie, and intro, is a movie that is shown after Super Smash Flash 2 is started. Since v0.8 of the demo, three different versions of the opening movie have been created, and each can be viewed in the Vault.
v0.8 opening movie[]
Portion from the opening for v0.8.
The opening movie for v0.8 of the demo is based on the opening movie in the original Super Smash Bros., directly recreating various scenes and using the same music, particularly the Japanese version. It starts with the text "McLeodGaming Proudly Presents", followed by the text "A game developed by Cleod9". It then flashes screenshots for each of the previous demos and shows the SSF2 logo for v0.8. Eight characters — Mario, Donkey Kong, Link, Lloyd, Mega Man, Pikachu, Sonic, and Kirby — briefly appear with their character selection screen artwork, followed by scenes of each character performing a quick move on their respective home stages. The eight characters are then shown running together to the left.
Several scenes are then played in sequence. First, Tails runs around a loop in Angel Island Zone, with sprites taken from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Fox is then shown using Fox Illusion to dash across Sector Z. After this, five gameplay screenshots are shown and panned across. Ichigo then uses Engetsuzan to traverse across Hueco Mundo and attacks Peach, who counters with Peach Bomber. Naruto and Goku then transform into Kyūbi Naruto and Super Saiyan Goku, respectively, on Planet Namek.
Mario and Kirby are then seen running toward each other against a black backdrop before meeting at a white light. They then jump into the air and clash against each other, followed by the other six characters from the start of the movie. The screen fades white, and Ness, Sora, Black Mage, and Wario are briefly shown. Finally, the title screen appears.
Of the playable characters in v0.8, Yoshi appears only in a gameplay screenshot, and Captain Falcon does not appear at all.
v0.9 opening movie[]
Portion from the opening for v0.9.
The opening movie for v0.9 is based on the opening movie in Super Smash Bros. Melee, directly recreating various scenes and using the same music. It starts with the animated McLeodGaming logo and shows Mario's sprite from the original Super Smash Flash launching into the sky. Upon landing, he shifts to his sprites from v0.9a of the SSF2 demo and faces off against Link. The logo for the game then briefly flashes, and Mario, Link, Kirby, and Pikachu engage in combat.
Peach is then shown against a pink background and Mario performs several attacks. The background fades to a dark red, and Black Mage appears with fire beneath him. Donkey Kong is then shown running across a green background and jumps into the sky and toward the screen, followed by Samus firing a Missile and jumping out of view before Mega Man appears and fires from his Mega Buster. A sweeping red background then appears as images of Link, Meta Knight, Lloyd, and Sora pan across it. As they disappear, several green and blue Yoshis are shown running across the ground and up a hill. The track of Sand Ocean is then shown, where Sonic runs across it several times before being picked up by Tails, and the Falcon Flyer boosts above it with Captain Falcon performing several moves on it. Ichigo, Naruto, and Goku then appear on their respective home stages and transform into Bankai Ichigo, Kyūbi Naruto, and Super Saiyan Goku, respectively, before launching into the sky together.
A nighttime background then fades in as Sheik performs acrobatics with a ghostly image of Zelda beside her. They look into the sky to see Kirby riding a Warp Star into the sky. As he disappears, an Arwing controlled by Fox boosts downward and past a Wolfen controlled by Wolf O'Donnell from Star Fox, which are actually a recolored Arwing and Fox, respectively. Ness then warps onto Onett from EarthBound and faces the screen. After this, several Pokémon including Charizard, Gligar, Hitmonlee, Delibird, Victini, Chatot, Shroomish, Togepi, Snorlax, Metang, Ditto, and Chikorita appear with Pikachu in the center, and Jigglypuff pokes out from the bottom right corner of the screen. The Blue Falcon and Fire Stingray from F-ZERO then race across the Sand Ocean track and clash into each other before the Blue Falcon knocks the Fire Stingray off, causing it to explode.
A glimmer of light then appears against a purple background, sucking in the portrait artworks for various characters, and several quick scenes play in succession. Sora appears against a stormy background and channels lightning into the Kingdom Key as Mario, Peach, and Yoshi duck down, with Wario running behind them. Link then plays the Ocarina of Time as Zelda and Sheik pose behind him. After this, Donkey Kong is shown getting electrocuted by PK Thunder, followed by Ness on Onett looking back as Mega Man explodes behind him. Captain Falcon then races Sonic against a red background, with Sonic outrunning him. The Blue Falcon, Falcon Flyer, and Great Fox are then shown flying together against an orange sky. Finally, Bomberman briefly appears and places a bomb down before being cut off by the text "GET READY". It then explodes and the SSF2 logo for v0.9 appears as the announcer shouts "Super Smash Flash 2!" and the movie ends.
Although this opening movie was used for v0.9b, it does not include any characters or updated sprites introduced in this demo.
Beta opening movie[]
Portion from the opening for Beta.
The opening movie for Beta is based on the opening movie in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, directly recreating various scenes, particularly cutscenes from the Subspace Emissary, and using the same music. It starts by panning across several characters standing on a cliff, including Zelda, Wario, Kirby, Yoshi, Samus, Bowser, Captain Falcon, Chibi-Robo, Falco, Mr. Game & Watch, Link, Ness, Fox, Mario, Pit, Peach, Donkey Kong, Jigglypuff, and Pikachu, before showing them from behind alongside Meta Knight, Bomberman, and Luigi looking out at the rotating sky. The SSF2 logo then appears over them.
Several scenes introducing characters are then played in sequence. First, Mario is shown on Pokémon Colosseum shifting from his previous sprites from v0.4b to v0.9a into those used in Beta. Link then appears in the Forest and holds out the Master Sword, followed by Kirby landing in Pokémon Colosseum and posing. Pit then appears in Skyworld and fends off against several Starmen. Peach and Zelda are then shown in Pokémon Colosseum looking down at the audience, followed by Meta Knight dashing across the Battlefield Fortress. Donkey Kong is then shown pounding the ground in the Jungle as Bomberman falls toward him with a bomb exploding in his face. Fox then uses Fox Illusion to dash across Sector Z, and Mega Man poses on Skull Fortress. After this, Sheik attacks across Jungle Hijinx, and Pikachu uses Thunder to attack Bowser, Ness, and Samus on Final Destination. Isaac is then shown on Rainbow Route posing next to Kirby with Isaac's Copy Ability. After this, Zero Suit Samus walks forward to find her Power Suit, and the screen fades to black.
The next scene shows Wario jumping down from Temple and facing the screen. Chibi-Robo is then shown standing in front of a Chibi-House as Telly Vision flies in front of him, followed by Yoshi sleeping on a tree stump in the Forest. A blue and pink Mr. Game & Watch, referencing the Ice Climbers, are then shown cheering on Flat Zone +. Ness is then shown posing in the Ruined Zoo in front of Black Mage, followed by scenes of Bandana Dee posing on Dream Land, Black Mage posing against a black background, and Bowser roaring in the Jungle. Sonic and PAC-MAN are then shown posing on Green Hill Zone and PAC-MAZE, respectively, followed by brief clips showing Wario on Emerald Cave, Ness on Fourside, Sandbag on Lunar Core, Jigglypuff on Saffron City, Yoshi on Yoshi's Island, Donkey Kong on Gangplank Galleon, Pikachu on Battlefield, Peach on Waiting Room, and Meta Knight on a mountain below the clouds. Yoshi, Pit, Link, Mario, and Kirby are then shown together in a castle.
After this, an Arwing flies through the sky, followed by Zelda and Kirby landing on Pokémon Colosseum together. A recreation of the "The World Returns" cutscene from the Subspace Emissary in which the Great Maze is breaking apart is then shown, with various stages from SSF2 appearing. Tails is then shown flying over Twilight Town with Black Mage and Captain Falcon watching at a distance. The next scene shows Link walking across Clock Town during the night and then walking in the other direction with three Stray Fairies during the day. Falco then attacks Pikachu on Meteo Campaigns, followed by Zero Suit Samus taunting on Smashville. Sora then uses Aerial Recovery on Twilight Town, and Mario breaks a block on Mushroom Kingdom III to acquire a Super Mushroom. A scene of Zelda, Kirby, and Fox fighting on Yoshi's Story is then shown.
A quick sequence of scenes then follows, including Pikachu defending Samus on Phase 8, Zelda using Farore's Wind, Lloyd using the Eternal Sword to grow wings on Tower of Salvation, Isaac kneeling on Venus Lighthouse, and White Mage defending Black Mage while he fights a Bomb on Chaos Shrine. Marth and Meta Knight are then shown on the Battlefield Fortress with a Subspace explosion in the background as the view pans around them. Bandana Dee, Tails, Mega Man, and Chibi-Robo are then shown flying together on Jungle Hijinx. After this, Link faces Dark Link on Hylian Skies, followed by Kirby and Peach flying on a Warp Star and Bowser jumping down from Bowser's Castle. Mario and Link are then shown running across the Wilds and dodging lasers, followed by Sora running up the staircase in Castle Oblivion from the KINGDOM HEARTS series, Samus and Pikachu running toward the screen with a black background (referencing the "In the Subspace Bomb Factory" cutscene), and Isaac, Marth, and Meta Knight running across the Battlefield Fortress. Peach is then shown dancing on Galaxy Tours alongside Lubba. Finally, Master Hand slowly emerges from Final Destination, and the title screen appears.
Of the playable characters in Beta, Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Ichigo, and any characters introduced after Beta 1.0 do not appear. The movie was later updated in Beta 1.2 with updated sprites for Yoshi, Link, Kirby, Ness, Isaac, Tails, and Sora. It was updated a second time in Beta 1.2.4 with updated sprites for Captain Falcon; a third time in Beta 1.3.1 with updated sprites for Black Mage; and a fourth time in Beta 1.4 with updated sprites for Sheik, Zelda, Meta Knight, Falco and Lloyd, as well as several stages.
