Lunar Core is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 hailing from the FINAL FANTASY series.
Layout[]
Lunar Core consists of a large main platform that extends to the bottom blast line and two soft platforms floating above it, with one on each side. The main platform has three flat sections connected with slopes directed upward to the left, with the platform being highest on its left side and lowest on its right side.
With hazards turned on, lasers fire across the sides of the stage approximately every 32 seconds. This can include two horizontal lasers fired near the center, three horizontal lasers spread out across the stage, or four vertical lasers spread out across the stage. The paths of lasers glow momentarily before they are fired, and players hit by lasers may receive multiple hits, with each dealing 2% damage and weak knockback.
Music[]
- The main music track is The Final Battle, an intense dramatic remix of the theme that plays during the battle against Zeromus, the final boss of FINAL FANTASY IV.
- The alternate music track is Within the Giant, a dramatic remix of the theme that plays inside the Giant of Babil in FINAL FANTASY IV.
Tournament legality[]
Originally, Lunar Core was seen as a tournament legal counter-pick stage when hazards were off. However, as the metagame progressed, people started realizing that the stage had way too many problems. The stage is way too big and promotes camping due to its platform layout. The stage also has large sloped areas. The main platform is a pass-through platform, allowing characters to shark underneath the stage where their opponent is unable to reach. As a result, the stage allows certain characters to avoid combat altogether and win by running down the clock, resulting in the stage becoming banned.
Origin[]

The final room of the Lunar Core in FINAL FANTASY IV.
The Lunar Core is the final area of the Lunar Subterrane, the final dungeon of FINAL FANTASY IV. The dungeon itself is a massive cave complex that Cecil and his party access after destroying the Giant of Babil in order to confront Zemus, the main antagonist of the game. The Lunar Core starts on the eighth underground floor of the dungeon, and unlike the upper floors' gritty appearance, it is made up of shiny, square rock tiles with rocks hanging down. The upper floors of the area are connected with stairways, whereas the lower floors are instead connected with teleporters. On the lowest floor, Cecil and his party encounter and fight Zemus and, following his death, his spirit and hatred reborn as Zeromus, which serves as the final boss of the game.
The stage in SSF2 includes features present throughout the Lunar Core, such as its stairways connecting planes, a teleporter, and the pillars present on the final floor. The square tiles most closely resemble their appearance in the PlayStation Portable release of FINAL FANTASY IV, in which they are normally reflective and have a shiny blue color during battle. The lasers fired are based on enemy abilities that utilize lasers throughout the FINAL FANTASY series, such as Laser or Laser Barrage, though Lunar Core contains no enemies that can use abilities like these.

Trivia[]
- Early in the stage's development, it was planned for Zeromus from FINAL FANTASY IV to appear as a background character, further implying that he is firing the lasers that appear across the stage. For unknown reasons, this was scrapped before the stage's release.
