Floating

Goku and Peach floating.

Floating is a special ability in Super Smash Flash 2 that can be performed by Goku, Peach and the Final Forms, Super Saiyan Goku and Bankai Ichigo. It is performed by jumping and then holding the jump button once you're in midair. When Peach or Goku uses this move, they can float in midair for a limited time, and can move left or right and use aerial attacks. They are unable to air dodge or use special moves. Goku can float for about four seconds while Peach can float for about eight seconds. In the case for Super Saiyan Goku and Bankai Ichigo, they can float indefinitely for the remainder of their transformation and move a bit faster than the regular characters.

Auto Float-cancel is the act of floating without using a characters midair jump. It is performed by pressing the jump and down button at the same time. This will make the character float and make them look like they are hovering over the ground. This way the floater can use aerial attacks in quick succession on grounded opponents.

Origin

Peach's ability to float comes from the NES game Super Mario Bros. 2 where she can do so for some seconds by holding the jump button. It is also a move exclusive to her, because of this, she could access some shortcuts other characters would be unable to reach. In turn, the ability for Peach to float in SMB2 comes from Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic (夢工場 ドキドキパニック Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panikku) where the character Lina, whom Peach replaced in the western SMB2, exhibited the same ability.

In the Dragon Ball series, flight is a common technique that allows the user to manipulate his/her ki, thereby allowing them to levitate or float in the air, as Goku does in Super Smash Flash 2. It is unknown when Goku learned this technique, but it is widely presumed he learned it while he was training with Kami-sama (神様, Kami-sama, Viz serialization: Kami) during the 3-year gap that followed Piccolo Daimao's (ピッコロ大魔王, Pikkoro Daimaō, Viz serialization: King Piccolo) defeat at the hands of Goku. He then exhibited this ability for for the first time in the 23rd World Martial Art Tournament to finish off Piccolo Daimao's son and reicarnation, Piccolo Jr.. Goku would later used it, alongside the rest of the Z Flighters, as his main way for traveling around the world.
