Fireball (ファイアボール) is a recurring projectile attack in the Mario franchise also usable by Mario in the Super Smash Flash series.

Overview

The attack consists of Mario releasing a fireball from his hands to burn down opponents. Mario's Fireball has a reddish-orange coloration.

In Super Smash Flash

In the original Super Smash Flash, Fireball is Mario's standard attack. It is particularly not affected by gravity and travels in a straight horizontal line until it disappears out of screen; it is able to strike numerous opponents as a result of this, dealing a set 4% of damage per frame, the distance it covers is also quite ample. All these traits are shared with Luigi's Fireball variant.

In Super Smash Flash 2

For the reboot, Super Smash Flash 2, Fireball is Mario's standard special move and now it works more akin to its Super Smash Bros. counterparts: it is affected by gravity and continues to bounce forward until it hits an opponent, doing 5% of damage, or bounces back from a wall, before eventually fizzling out should it not hit anything. Its distance is also reduced.

Origin

Fireballs first appear in the arcade game Mario Bros. as an obstacle to be evaded by Mario or Luigi. It came in red and green variants; the first moving in random patters affected by gravity, while the latter moves in a straight line from one side to the other.

The first time Mario is able to shoot Fireballs by himself, however, was in Super Mario Bros., done by obtaining a Fire Flower. Fireballs could be used to take down every enemy in the game, with the exception of Buzzy Beetles.

In Super Smash Flash 2, Mario's Fireball attributes seem to be based on the red Fireball obstacle from Mario Bros.. It should also be noted that on its original appearance, a Fireball does not bounce from walls, it immediately disappears upon contact with them.
