The Fire Flower (ファイアフラワー) is a shooting item in the Super Smash Flash series hailing as a power-up from the Mario series.

Overview[]

In Super Smash Flash[]

In the original Super Smash Flash, pressing the attack input while holding the Fire Flower shoots a stream of fire forward, dealing 6% damage per frame and moderate knockback to opponents hit. The Fire Flower disappears after being used ten times. It can also be thrown away by holding up or down while airborne and pressing the attack input, dealing 6% damage per frame to opponents hit and disappearing.

In Super Smash Flash 2[]

In Super Smash Flash 2, pressing the attack input while holding the Fire Flower fires a short-ranged fireball in a random direction forward, and holding the input continually shoots fireballs, with each dealing 1% flame damage and weak knockback. It can shoot up to 44 fireballs, after which continuing to hold the attack input releases harmless smoke. Pressing the attack input again when empty throws the item, and it then disappears upon landing. When thrown, it deals 10% flame damage and weak knockback to opponents hit.

The Fire Flower and Ice Flower are the only shooting items that can be held to release a continuous stream, and they are also the only ones that cannot be used in place of a forward aerial.

The Fire Flower is a power-up debuting in Super Mario Bros., and it has become one of the most recurring power-ups in the Mario series. In most games it appears in, making contact with a Fire Flower grants the character a "Fire" form, which normally changes the color of their clothing to be white with a unique secondary color. With this form, characters are normally able to shoot fireballs forward, which bounce from the ground and immediately defeat many enemies on contact.

In the original SSF, the Fire Flower's design is based on its unique appearance in Super Smash Bros. Melee, whereas in SSF2, it is instead based on its modern appearance in the Mario series as of Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time. In both games and the Super Smash Bros. series, rather than granting the player the ability to shoot fire, the Fire Flower itself is used to shoot it. This behavior is similar to the Fire Flower's function as an item in Paper Mario and its sequel, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, in which the Fire Flower is planted on the ground and fires a torrent of fireballs at all enemies.

The Fire Flower's original appearance in Super Smash Flash 2.

  • Prior to its appearance as an item in Beta 1.0 of SSF2, the Fire Flower appeared during Mario's early Final Smash, Fire Mario, in which he would hold up a Fire Flower to transform from Mario to Fire Mario. This was removed in v0.9b of the demo, in which Mario's Final Smash was changed to Mario Finale.
    • Prior to v0.5a of the demo, Mario used two Fire Flowers to transform into Fire Mario.
