Gum-Gum Pistol (ゴムゴムのピストル) is Luffy's neutral special move in Super Smash Flash 2.

Overview

When performed, Luffy stretches one arm a great distance forward. If it connects with an opponent, Luffy will then pull them into his grab, and thus, can pummel and throw them. If it connects with an opponent in midair, the opponent will simply be let go of when they reach Luffy, though they can still be held if Luffy reaches the ground before then. Additionally, if the player inputs forward just as Luffy's hand connects with an opponent, then instead of pulling the opponent toward Luffy, Luffy will be hurled toward the opponent.

The move can also be used as a tether grab when connecting with a ledge to aid Luffy's recovery. Additionally, if Luffy is holding an item when using the move, then he will put the item on his back until the move ends.

Origin

In One Piece, Gum-Gum Pistol is one of Luffy's signature attacks. However, the move is actually used as a punching attack as opposed to grabbing, as it is used in SSF2. The original version of the move is actually used in Luffy's forward smash.

Luffy's first use of the move in the series was in Chapter 1: ROMANCE DAWN when he defeated the local sea king in East Blue. However, as a child, Luffy created the move saying that "His punch was as strong as a pistol" though he lacked the training and failed to properly use the move on many occasions. Since then, there have been many occurrences and different variations of this attack performed by Luffy throughout the series.

Although not named Gum-Gum Pistol, Luffy has used similar attacks in One Piece to grab opponents from afar then attack when up close or even to pull others out of harms way. More notable appearances of the technique have appeared in video games such as Gum-Gum Impact in One Piece: Grand Adventure and Gum-Gum Kusarigama in One Piece: Unlimited Adventure.
