- This article is about Luigi's down special. For Mario's related down special, see Mario Tornado.
Luigi Cyclone (ルイージサイクロン), is a recurring attack used by Luigi in the Super Smash Flash series.
Overview[]
Luigi Cyclone works very similarly to Mario's Mario Tornado: Luigi spins around rapidly with his arms out to attack opponents. However, there are a few traits that set it apart from Mario's respective move.
In Super Smash Flash[]
In the original Super Smash Flash, Luigi Cyclone is Luigi's down aerial. The move is almost almost identical to Mario's Mario Tornado, save for lasting a shorter duration of time and having a bigger hitbox.
In Super Smash Flash 2[]
In the reboot, Super Smash Flash 2, Luigi Cyclone is now Luigi's down special move. Luigi can now slide across the stage while performing the move, though it only hits twice, with one hit while he spins and the other when he finishes. However, it now functions as a recovery move and a vertical KO move, much like Mario Tornado does. Luigi Cyclone takes elements from Luigi's Super Smash Bros. Brawl incarnation recovery wise, while his hits and power are from the Super Smash Bros. incarnation.
Origin[]
The Luigi Cyclone is likely based on the Spin Jump that originated in Super Mario World. The Spin Jump has lower vertical range than Luigi's jump but deals more damage, can jump on hazardous enemies, and can break rotating blocks. In Super Mario Galaxy, both Mario and Luigi have a spinning attack very similar to the Mario Tornado and Luigi Cyclone. The spinning attack from Super Mario Galaxy made them gain some vertical height when used in the air, just like Luigi Cyclone and Mario Tornado, although in Super Mario Galaxy the spin acted more like a double jump.
