Fairies (妖精) are a recurring race of creatures in The Legend of Zelda series.

Character description[]

Throughout The Legend of Zelda series, most Fairies are small, luminescent that fly by means of delicate, insect-like wings. They most commonly reside in hidden Fairy Fountains. In some games, such as the original The Legend of Zelda, they are depicted as feminine humanoid creatures with two or four wings wielding small wands. In other games, such as The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, they instead resemble small orbs of light with four wings.

Fairies primarily serve as healing items, having the ability to restore some or all of Link's Hearts when collected. In many games, Link can also catch Fairies in bottles to heal himself on command or be automatically revived upon losing all Hearts. Several Fairies, such as Navi or Tatl, instead act as travel companions that offer advice or enable gameplay mechanics such as Z-Targeting. Additionally, certain variations of Fairies exist, such as the much larger Great Fairies or their scattered portions known as Stray Fairies.

In Super Smash Flash 2[]

In Super Smash Flash 2, a Fairy makes a small cameo appearance in Link's side taunt. When used, the Fairy flies in front of and then around him before returning to Link. The Fairy most heavily resembles Navi from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, though it may also be based on the Cursor Fairy from The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Additionally, when using the taunt with Link's twelfth costume, the Fairy instead uses sprites from Link's Fairy form in Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

As a background character[]

A Fairy also appears in SSF2 as a background character on Hylian Skies. This Fairy is instead based on its appearance in the instruction manual for The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, with its color palette being based on the Fairies from Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon. It occasionally flies through the sky in the distance from one side to the other.
