Fan characters in Smash Bros

Blade and Blue, the two fan characters in Super Smash Flash.

Fan characters, also known as fan-made characters and original characters, are characters based on established franchises that are unofficially created by fans of said franchises. Fan characters created by members of the McLeodGaming Forums appeared in the original Super Smash Flash and were initially slated to appear in its reboot, Super Smash Flash 2. However, following a revamp to the planned SSF2 roster, Gregory McLeod officially confirmed on May 18, 2012 that all fan characters would be cut from the roster due to no longer meeting the game's standards in quality and relevancy, as well as the fact that many of their original creators had long since left the community.[1]

Azrael's proposed design for Super Smash Flash 2 prior to the roster change.

Azrael is a character created by the McLeodGaming Forums member Phratt. His name is a reference to the Angel of Death in Islamic culture with the same name. According to his backstory, which is based on the premise of the 1999 film, The Matrix, Azrael's real name is Karl Siriso. Upon entering a secret laboratory where the government was experimenting on a digital world called "UniverseV2", Karl was experimented on and made to kill residents of UniverseV2 who posed a threat to this experiment. He is equipped with a scythe called "Xcrete" and is able to manipulate the space and time within UniverseV2.

Azrael was initially planned to appear as a playable character in Super Smash Flash 2, even appearing in the original teaser for the game as a newcomer in 2008. His moveset would mainly have consisted of attacks using Xcrete, and his Final Smash had been confirmed to be an attack called "Final Judgement", in which Azrael would create an expanding portal to trap opponents that make contact with it, dealing massive damage. Like with most other fan characters, he was removed from the roster following its revamp.

Blade is a character created by the McLeodGaming Forums member Topcat. He is based on the Sonic franchise and derives from another Sonic fan character created by Newgrounds user Equinox-Twilight, Flare the Hedgehog. He is a short red hedgehog who wears blue gloves, pants, and shoes and who wields a characteristic sword. He was created to appear as the main character of an action-based platformer, which later became Super Smash Flash instead.

Blade appears as a starter character in the original Super Smash Flash, being the first character developed for the game, and uses edited sprites of Flare the Hedgehog. He was initially planned to appear again as a playable character in Super Smash Flash 2 with a completely new design and expanded moveset. Like with most other fan characters, he was removed from the roster following its revamp.

Blue is a character created by the McLeodGaming Forums member Topcat. Like Blade, he is a Sonic fan character deriving from Flare the Hedgehog. He is a blue hedgehog with long quills who wears red gloves and shoes with black accents and who wields a characteristic sword resembling a flamberg-type rapier that emits fire. It is unknown whether Blue was intended to appear in the game that eventually became Super Smash Flash.

Blue appears as an unlockable character in the original Super Smash Flash, being a clone character of Blade with slightly more powerful attacks at the cost of speed. He was initially planned to appear again as a playable character in Super Smash Flash 2 with a completely new design and expanded moveset more distinct from Blade. Like with most other fan characters, he was removed from the roster following its revamp.

Robo Ninja, also formatted as Robo-Ninja, is a character created by the McLeodGaming Forums member Raccoon. Little is known about this character, other than that she is a robotic female character who carries a large metallic Bō staff.

Robo Ninja was initially planned to appear as a playable character in Super Smash Flash 2. No information is known about what her moveset would have included or how she would have appeared in-game. Unlike other fan characters, she was removed from the roster very early into the game's development. This was at the request of her creator, as he wanted to use her in his own projects instead, but she has yet to be seen again on her own since then.

Spikeman[]

Spikeman's proposed design for Super Smash Flash 2 that ultimately got discarded.

Spikeman is a character created by the McLeodGaming Forums member of the same name. He is a red ball with shoes and a red mane who commonly uses his tongue to attack or grab, due to him having no arms. Nothing else is known about him or his origins.

Spikeman's transformation into Insane Spikeman for Super Smash Flash 2 that ultimately got discarded.

Spikeman was initially planned to appear as a playable character in Super Smash Flash 2. The only element of his moveset to be officially confirmed was that his Final Smash would have had him turn into Insane Spikeman, a Transformation Final Smash that would have made him smaller, faster, and stronger with a completely different moveset. Like with most other fan characters, he was removed from the roster following its revamp.
