Dedede's Arena, also called Dedede Arena or Dedede Ring (デデデリング), is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 coming from the Kirby series. It comprises the boxing ring where Kirby usually comes face-to-face with King Dedede.

Layout[]

Dedede's Arena consists of a large main platform with two short walls in the shape of a boxing arena. On the outer side of each wall, there is a large soft platform sloped slightly upward away from the main platform.

The background of this stage features Commentator Waddle Dee in the boxing ring, who extends his arms out whenever a KO is scored. There are also two Waddle Dees holding cameras next to large golden statues of King Dedede, Kabula flying through the sky, and a large audience of Kirby series characters cheering for the match. These include repeated enemies, including Waddle Dee, Bronto Burt, Cappy, Poppy Bros. Jr., Waddle Doo, Flapper, Squishy, Scarfy, Sir Kibble, Whiskers, Sparky, Wheelie, Noddy, Chilly, Knuckle Joe, Walky, NESP, and Wester, as well as various characters with only one appearance, including Rick, Kine, Coo, Gooey, and Batamon.

Origin[]

Dedede's Arena (origin)

The Dedede Arena in Kirby Super Star Ultra

The Dedede Arena is the final room of the Mt. Dedede stage in Kirby's Dream Land and the "Spring Breeze" sub-game of Kirby Super Star. It is a boxing ring located in Castle Dedede where Kirby faces off against King Dedede. Its design in Kirby Super Star onward features bleachers with various Kirby enemies cheering for the fight. It also appears as the final area of the "Revenge of the King" sub-game of Kirby Super Star Ultra, where Kirby fights Masked Dedede, in which it sports a unique yellow design with electric cages and only Bandana Waddle Dee watching in the bleachers.

The stage in SSF2 is based most closely on the Dedede Arena's appearance in the "Spring Breeze" sub-game of Kirby Super Star Ultra. The platform layout takes inspiration from its appearance as a stage in the "Kirby Fighters" sub-game of Kirby: Triple Deluxe and its standalone sequel, Kirby Fighters 2, which features a long platform of metal bars over the boxing ring and a solid platform extending out on either side, whereas the SSF2 stage instead uses the metal bars for its slanted side platforms. The characters featured in the audience in the background of the stage are based on the audience that has appeared on this arena since Kirby Super Star, though the specific lineups of characters vary between the stage and the Kirby level. Kabula's appearance references her boss fight against Kirby prior to him entering Mt. Dedede in the "Revenge of the King" sub-game of Kirby Super Star Ultra, which is also referenced with the clouds in the background.

References to other Kirby media is also featured throughout the stage. The night sky most closely resembles the sky in which the the first phase of the battle against Nightmare takes place in Kirby's Adventure and its remake, Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, with the crescent-shaped Moon being made based on that is created at the end of their fight. The sky also includes the balloons from the background of Pumpkin Grand, the first level of the "Gourmet Race" sub-game of Kirby Super Star, and the Dreamstalk, a massive beanstalk-like vine from Kirby: Triple Deluxe. The walls and curtains are mainly based on Castle Dedede's appearance in Kirby Star Allies. The bricks that make up the centermost audience stand are based on the background of the "Egg Catcher" sub-game from Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe. Commentator Waddle Dee references his role in Kirby and the Forgotten Land, in which he commentates battles that occur in the Colosseum. The Waddle Dees holding cameras and the upper parts of the ceiling reference the Channel DDD studio in Kirby: Right Back at Ya!, particularly in the episode "Un-Reality TV".

Trivia[]

  • The inclusion of Flapper and Whiskers on the stage is considered a "signature" of developer Kirb-Star, who had previously created Kirby's Halloween Adventure, a ROM hack of Kirby's Adventure in which the two enemies are prominently featured.
