Crateria (クレテリア) is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 which hails from the Metroid series. It based on the surface location from Planet Zebes, a recurring location in the series, and is notably known for its constant never-ending acid rain.
Layout[]
Crateria consists of a large main platform with flat surfaces at three different elevations. The middle is divided by a tall wall, the top of which has short semisoft platforms that extend over the surface below. The right side of the platform contains a single long surface, whereas the left side has a cliff on its left edge leading to a lower surface. There is also a separate hard platform which starts on the rightmost edge of the stage and periodically moves slowly to the top of the stage, then to the left side, and finally to the leftmost edge. After the same time has passed, it moves in the opposite direction back to its starting position.
With hazards turned on, acid rainstorms occur approximately every 25 seconds, which are indicated by flashing warning signs pointing to the areas underneath the semisoft platforms at the top of the stage. The acid rain deals up to thirteen hits of 2% damage each with no knockback, which can be avoided only by hiding underneath the aforementioned platforms.
Music[]
- The main music track is Super Metroid Medley, an electronic rock medley of three remixed songs from Super Metroid: Samus Aran's Appearance, Upper Brinstar, Crateria Underground, and Lower Maridia.
- The alternate music track is Vs. Ridley, a rock remix of the theme that plays during the battles against Ridley, Draygon, or Torizos in Super Metroid.
Tournament legality[]
Criteria is considered to be banned in tournament play. The stage itself is rather large and contains a raised section in the middle, which creates walls that allow the player to camp on the lower regions a la Sector Z. The end result is a stage that greatly encourages degenerative play and time-outs, which makes it unsuitable for tournament play.
Origin[]

Crateria in Super Metroid.
Crateria is the surface area of Planet Zebes that first appeared in Super Metroid. It is a rocky area which frequently receives acid rain and meteors, with its multitude of caverns leading deeper into the planet serving as refuge. The right side of the area also contains the wreckage of a large ship that crashed onto the planet. Samus lands her gunship in Crateria when first arriving on Planet Zebes and accesses the majority of the planet's other areas through its caverns, most notably Tourian, which is guarded by golden statues of the game's four major bosses and opens upon their defeat. The area appears again as Samus's landing site in Metroid: Zero Mission.
In SSF2, Crateria is based on its appearance in Super Metroid, particularly at the start of the game when Samus lands during an acid rainstorm. The rain does not harm Samus in this game, though similar acid rain also appears in unshielded areas of the Pirate Homeworld in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, which can quickly kill Samus without the protection of the Hazard Shield. Various elements that appear throughout Super Metroid also appear throughout the stage, such as a Chozo Statue used to grant Samus upgrades for her Power Suit, a Geemer that serves as an enemy that can cling to walls, and a large glass tunnel that can be broken with a Power Bomb.

Trivia[]
- A special version of this stage's acid rain hazard appears in event #44: Climate Changes, in which it instead deals 16% damage per hit with a powerful meteor smash.
- Four different medleys were composed for this stage's main music track, Super Metroid Medley. Ironically, the one that was included was the only version that did not include the original Crateria theme from Super Metroid.
