Chaos Shrine (カオスの神殿) is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 hailing from the FINAL FANTASY series. It was added in demo v0.7 as part of the surprise for Black Mage's inclusion.

Layout[]

Chaos Shrine consists of a large main platform, which is raised on the left and right sides. A large number of bats flies around the roof in the background, and one of the Four Fiends drifts diagonally across the void in the background every fifteen seconds. In particular, Lich comes from the upper left, Marilith comes from the lower left, Kraken comes from the upper right, and Tiamat comes from the lower right.

Music[]

  • The main music track is Chaos Shrine, a calm remix of the theme that plays on the level of the same name in FINAL FANTASY.
  • The alternate music track is Battle (FINAL FANTASY I), a rock remix of the theme that plays during a random encounter in FINAL FANTASY.

Tournament legality[]

This stage is banned in tournament play. Though the layout is simple enough, the stage is very large and has huge boundaries, making KOs much more difficult than on other stages. Also, there are walls on the sides of the main fighting area, preventing horizontal KOs and enabling extended wall combos. The stage also has no floating platforms, giving similar advantages to characters as stages such as Final Destination and Tower of Salvation. These faults, though fairly minor on their own, add up pretty fast.

Origin[]

Chaos Shrine from the Past

Chaos Shrine of the past in the PlayStation Portable release of FINAL FANTASY.

The Chaos Shrine, originally known as the Temple of Fiends, is a major location in the original FINAL FANTASY. It is an ancient temple located at the center of the region where the game takes place and houses a Dark Crystal, which connects the present day to 2,000 years in the past. It first serves as the first dungeon in the game, in which the Warriors of Light are sent to it to rescue Princess Sarah from the evil lord Garland. After defeating the Four Fiends – Lich, Marilith, Kraken, and Tiamat – and lighting all four elemental crystals from their respective temples, they return to the Chaos Shrine as the final dungeon in the game, in which they travel 2,000 years into the past to find it more intact. Here, they defeat the Four Fiends once more and finally defeat Garland, who had absorbed the Fiends' power to become the Dark Lord Chaos.

The stage in SSF2 is most closely based on the Chaos Shrine's appearance in ports of FINAL FANTASY starting with its WonderSwan Color release. The main platform resembles the ruins of the present-day temple, and the bats reference those found in the room with the Dark Crystal, which are actually the missing Sky Warriors from Lufenia and give the player advice upon defeating the Four Fiends. The main background of the stage is based on the battle background when fighting Chaos in the past version of the temple, and the Four Fiends use their sprites from the PlayStation Portable release of the game. The door in the background depicts the Dark Crystal and the four elemental crystals, and the design of the door and red pathway resemble those on the "Old Chaos Shrine" arena from DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY.

Trivia[]

  • When first introduced in v0.7, Chaos Shrine was included as an unlockable stage that would become available upon unlocking Black Mage. It became a starter stage with subsequent releases.
