Cadence is the main protagonist of the rougelike rhythm game Crypt of the NecroDancer, as well as its sequels Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda and Rift of the NecroDancer. She appears as an Assist character in Fraymakers.
Character description[]
Cadence is a young explorer and the daughter of the famed treasure hunter Dorian. In Crypt of the NecroDancer, Cadence goes searching for her father, who had gone missing in search of a magical Golden Lute to revive Melody, Cadence's deceased mother. While searching, Cadence falls into a crypt and dies from the fall, causing her to be resurrected by the NecroDancer, the dark sorcerer who controls the crypt. The NecroDancer separates Cadence's heart from her body and forces her to fight through the minions in his crypt to retrieve it, with the movement of Cadence and the NecroDancer's minions being linked to her heartbeat.
Cadence starts each run of the crypt with a basic dagger weapon and a shovel used to dig into walls. Various other equipment and treasures can be found throughout the crypt, such as weapons, torches, and spells, which Cadence can collect and use throughout her journey through the crypt. Due to the NecroDancer's curse, she can only act with each beat of the music, the tempo of which ascends as she reaches deeper levels.
In Cadence of Hyrule, Cadence is transported to the land of Hyrule from The Legend of Zelda by the Triforce after the evil Octavio places Link and Princess Zelda into a magical slumber and takes over the kingdom. While searching for a way home, she awakens either Link or Zelda before bidding them farewell and continuing on her search. In Rift of the NecroDancer, Candence is brought into Rhythm Rifts created by the NecroDancer to engage his minions and repair said rifts.
In Fraymakers[]
Cadence is one of the Assist characters in Fraymakers, and she was made available in v0.7.7 of Early Access on January 15, 2025. When called upon, she digs her shovel in front of her and then behind her, dealing 6 damage per hit and either burying grounded opponents or spiking airborne opponents hit. She then casts a fireball spell, shooting long pillars of flame from both sides of her that deal 15 damage and high knockback to opponents hit. Much like in Crypt of the NecroDancer, these three actions are done in rhythm with each other. Afterward, she picks up a torch and disappears from the stage.
