Butter Building (バタービルディング) is a starter stage in Super Smash Flash 2 hailing from the Kirby series. It is based on the area of the same name from Kirby's Adventure.

Layout[]

Butter Building consists of several "floors" represented by sets of platforms, with each consisting of a large main platform, which is hard for the first floor and soft otherwise, and smaller soft platforms floating above it. These platforms are all slightly sloped as if they form a circular path around the building the stage takes place on.

The stage starts with two floors being accessible, and with hazards turned on, the stage will endlessly scroll slowly upward, which occurs after about second seconds and is indicated by a flashing warning sign. The top and bottom blast lines are indicated by clouds covering those portions of the screen, and new platforms from the top of the stage become accessible as they enter these boundaries. There are four unique platform layouts that can occur on each floor, which appear in a set pattern. These layouts include the following, in order of appearance starting from the bottom of the stage:

  • There are three soft platforms, with the middle platform being the lowest, the right platform being the shortest, and the left platform being the highest.
  • There are three soft platforms, with the bottom platform being slightly to the left and the top platforms being level with each other.
  • There are two soft platforms, with the right platform being longer and lower than the left platform.
  • There are four soft platforms, with the bottom platform being slightly to the right and the top platforms being level with each other.

With hazards turned off, in addition to the stage not scrolling upward, the second floor lacks the two highest soft platforms, and no upper floors can be accessed.

Music[]

  • The main music track is Butter Building, an upbeat remix of the theme that plays in the Butter Building levels in Kirby's Adventure.
  • The alternate music track is Bubbly Clouds, a chiptune remix of the theme of the fourth level, Bubbly Clouds, in Kirby's Dream Land.

Tournament legality[]

This stage is banned in tournament play, because with hazards on the stage endlessly scrolls upward, forcing players to focus on battling the opponent(s) as well as climbing to survive. With hazards off, the platforms that replace the stage scrolling have an uneven layout.

Origin[]

Butter Building Origin

Kirby traversing Butter Building in Kirby's Adventure.

In Kirby's Adventure and its remake Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land, Butter Building is the third level Kirby has to traverse through in order to repair the Star Rod. It is a large, yellow tower that extends to the sky, and each stage in Butter Building involves Kirby having to travel up the tower in order to progress, with sections on both the inside and the outside.

The stage in SSF2 is based on the third and fourth stages of the level in Kirby's Adventure, in which Kirby ascends the outside of the tower by running across the balcony and flying with the Warp Star, respectively. It also resembles the Battle Stage of the same name from Kirby Fighters Deluxe and Kirby Fighters 2, except that the tower is stuck in a perpetual ascent rather than rotation like in the games.
