A buff is a term used to describe an improvement or strengthening over a character's aspects and attributes, which may come, either, by game updates or by releasing a new game. It is often done for balancing purposes, characters that may prove to be poor and ineffective against other characters receive buffs to compensate these problems. Its opposite term is nerf, which means weakening a character between games and updates.

The transition of characters between Super Smash Flash and Super Smash Flash 2 saw a significant buff in all characters, from a simplistic set of five attacks in SSF to a complete new set of attacks in SSF2. New demo releases for SSF2 also come with new buffs for certain characters, handled by the balancing team.
