This article is about the character in general. For the fighter info in SSF2, see Bomberman (Super Smash Flash 2). For the universe info, see Bomberman (universe).

Bomberman (ボンバーマン), also known as White Bomberman or simply White Bomber, is the main protagonist of the Bomberman series produced and published by the defunct Hudson Soft, which is now owned by Konami. Bomberman is a robotic lifeform who lives on his home world of Planet Bomber with his ability to produce bombs that explode in cross-like patterns as his primary weapon of choice. Bomberman is one of the playable characters appearing in Super Smash Flash 2.

Character description[]

Bomberman is depicted generally as a robotic lifeform whose main ability is to create bombs out of his own hands (hence his name). He first appeared in his namesake game, released in 1983. His iconic design, featuring a round head, ball-like hands and feet, and an antenna, was actually repurposed from an enemy character in Hudson Soft's older game, Lode Runner. This design was initially adopted for the NES port of the first Bomberman game and became the character's signature look throughout the rest of the series.

The main Bomberman known as "White Bomberman" acts as the primary representative of the Bomberman race, who are the dominant inhabitants of Planet Bomber. Like other Bombermen, he possesses the unique ability to craft a vast array of bombs, from simple explosives to those imbued with elemental powers. However, unlike many other video game series, the Bomberman series has traditionally lacked a consistent continuity between its various installments. This has resulted in multiple versions of Bomberman existing across different games, some often with significantly different characterizations and origins. Despite this disparity, most iterations portray him as a heroic and cheerful figure, frequently defending his home planet from various threats and disasters from whatever evil forces come his way.

In other games, such as Bomberman Max and Bomberman Tournament, he is shown to be part of an interplanetary police force stationed at Bomber Base. The White Bomberman also made appearances in other games, such as Wario Blast: Featuring Bomberman!, a Bomberman game featuring Nintendo mascot Mario's rival, Wario (although that was not the case in Japan). He also appears in DreamMix TV World Fighters, a Hudson fighting game with characters from Hudson Soft, Konami, and Takara. He even makes a giant playable appearance in "Star Parodier", a spoof of the Star Soldier series, which is also developed by Hudson Soft. He has been featured in three anime series; Bomberman B-Daman Bakugaiden and Bomberman B-Daman Bakugaiden Victory are based on the marble shooting game B-Daman and Bomberman Jetters which had White Bomber be the little brother of Mighty, after his disappearance White inspired to become a Jetter just like him.

Bomberman appears as a playable character in Super Smash Flash 2. He is the second character added to the game who was not previously announced to be part of the roster, the first being Black Mage. His appearance is based on his design in the game Bomberman Generation, which depicts the White Bomber with a red scarf and golden bracelets. This design was chosen as it is the most common depiction of Bomberman as he would appear in a Super Smash Bros. games, particularly based on Super Smash Bros. Brawl fanarts, which depicted Bomberman in the aforementioned design. Combat-wise, Bomberman can create bombs, which vary in power depending how long he holds them. Bombs do not explode by themselves, Bomberman needs to detonate them first so they can explode all at once.
