In competitive play, a banned stage is a stage that is not eligible for tournament play. A stage may be banned for a variety of reasons, such as:

  • Providing extreme advantages or disadvantages for certain characters
  • Having a bad layout that encourages degenerate strategies like camping
  • Being too large or too small, increasing or decreasing character survivability beyond reason
  • Having stage hazards that disrupt normal gameplay
  • Possessing exploitable glitches that break the game when abused
  • Having many graphical elements that increase the amount of lag to unreasonable levels
  • Having stage elements that remove an important aspect of the game, such as walk-off edges

Basically, any stage that proves to be detrimental to the competitive nature of the game is typically banned.

List of banned stages in Super Smash Flash

This is the current ban list for Super Smash Flash, as of May 23, 2015.

Stage Status Commonly cited reasons for banning
Emerald Hill Zone Banned Overly large size; very easy to camp from the edges with projectiles
Mushroom Kingdom II Banned Very small; walk-off edges
Peach's Castle Banned Walk-off edges; overly large size; multi-level layout gives too great of an advantage to players on the bottom platform due to the game's bad platform dropping mechanic; players can get stuck inside the warp pipe

List of banned stages in Super Smash Flash 2

This is the current list of banned stages for Super Smash Flash 2 Beta, as of July 1, 2017. There are three levels of stage bans:

  • Banned: Stages that are banned in all forms of competitive play.
  • Banned in back room list: Stages that are banned from the official Backroom stage list, but are sometimes legal in experimental rulesets.
  • Banned in back room online list: Stages that are banned from the official online Backroom stage list, but are legal in offline tournaments and experimental online rulesets.

Note that this banlist only covers singles, as the competitive doubles metagame is virtually nonexistent at this time. It should be noted that all these stages are banned regardless of the hazard switch, unless stated otherwise.

Stage Status Commonly cited reasons for banning
Bomb Factory Banned Walk-off edges; completely featureless design makes it redundant due to Final Destination, Nintendo 3DS, and Tower of Salvation having similar layouts; main platform is too low on the screen, causing the HUD to obscure the fighters
Bowser's Castle Banned Lava prevents bottom kills; very small blast lines allow for disproportionately early kills; lacks a proper main platform
Casino Night Zone Banned Floating platforms located far beyond the edges of the main platform enhance the horizontal KO ability of fighters that normally lack a decent offstage game; invisible obstructions can interfere with knockback trajectories, saving players who would otherwise be KO'd or vice-versa; odd main platform layout gives a disproportionate advantage to whoever controls the center of the stage
Central Highway Banned Overly large; lacks a proper main platform; contains "pits of death" between platforms
Chaos Shrine Banned Long length, walls, and very high ceiling disproportionately increase fighter survivability
Clock Town Banned Lacks a proper main platform; left-hand edges are bugged
Crateria Banned Overly large; very bad platform layout promotes camping; tunnels and moving platforms create caves of life
Desk Banned Overly large; walk-off on the right side; very bad platform layout promotes camping
Devil's Machine Banned Overly large, more than almost any other stage; walk-off edges; no bottom boundary
Distant Planet Banned Walk-off slope on the left side; left side boundary is too close to the stage; main platform encourages sharking; layout encourages circle camping
Dracula's Castle Banned in back room online list Stage lags badly online due to the presence of many graphical elements
Emerald Cave Banned Cave of life inside the stage; edges sometimes obstructed by breakable walls; pit of death
Final Destination Banned in back room online list Stage lags badly online due to the presence of many graphical elements
Final Valley Banned Overly large; odd platform layout; layout encourages camping; pit of death divides the stage in two, leaving no proper main platform
Flat Zone+ Banned Overly large; pits of death on bottom platform; walk-off edges; layout encourages camping
Fourside Banned Lacks a proper main platform; pits of death between buildings; large spire makes traversing the stage difficult; layout encourages camping
Galaxy Tours Banned Random selection between multiple stage layouts encourages abuse of resetting the match
Gangplank Galleon Banned in back room list Very long length and walls give a disproportionate advantage to vertical finishers; buggy collisions on the slope at the bow of the ship
Green Hill Zone Banned Boundaries very close to the stage; walk-off edges; no bottom boundary
Hidden Leaf Village Banned Overly large; many walls and easily campable places on the far sides of the stage
Hueco Mundo Banned Overly large; walk-off on the left side; excessive slopes; moving platform encourages camping
Hylian Skies Banned Walls make horizontal kills difficult; stage collisions can be buggy during stage transformation
Hyrule Castle (64) Banned Overly large; platform layout promotes excessive camping; Combo Tent
Jungle Hijinx Banned in back room list Slope in the center of the stage disrupts the ground game; powerful camping location under the floating platform; platform arrangement made redundant by Castle Siege
Lake of Rage Banned Overly large; walk-off on left; layout encourages camping; pit of death divides the stage in two, leaving no proper main platform; pass-through platform on left encourages sharking
Lunar Core Banned Overly large; pass-through main platform encourages sharking
Metal Cavern Banned Tiny, uneven layout provides advantages to larger, stronger or disjointed characters
Meteo Campaign Banned Overly large; very bad platform layout promotes camping; large walls
Mushroom Kingdom Banned Overly large; pit of death divides the stage in two; blocks form cave of life; walk-off edges
Mushroom Kingdom II Banned Overly small; lacks a proper main platform; walk-off edges
Mushroom Kingdom III Banned Wonky platform layout unsuitable for competitive play; breakable blocks form caves of life; walk-off edges
Nintendo 3DS Banned in back room list Ledges can disrupt certain recoveries; layout made redundant by Final Destination and Waiting Room
Peach's Castle Banned in back room list Large tower spire makes traversing the stage difficult; layout encourages camping
Phase 8 Banned Very large platform-heavy stage promotes circle camping; walls make horizontal KOs difficult; pit of death divides the stage in two, leaving no proper main platform
Planet Namek Banned Pits of death; lacks a proper main platform; walk-off edges; close boundaries
Pokémon Colosseum Banned in back room online list Stage lags badly online due to the presence of many graphical elements.
Saffron City (64) Banned Overly large; pits of death between buildings; central tower spire makes traversing the stage difficult; layout encourages camping
Sand Ocean Banned Road hazard prevents kills off the bottom of the screen and can lead to very early kills off the left-hand side; stage layout encourages circle camping and stalling underneath the Falcon Flyer
Sector Z Banned Overly large; gun platform allows for easy camping; over-centralization on the back of the ship due to the wall
Shadow Moses Island Banned No side nor bottom boundaries due to walls and floor, forcing players to KO exclusively off of the top of the screen
Silph Co. Banned Moving stage puts too much emphasis into keeping up; walls and ceilings create caves of life; walk-off edges; scatterbrain platform layouts
Skull Fortress Banned Overly large size and wonky platform layout encourages camping; walk-off edges
Sky Sanctuary Zone Banned in back room list Small blast lines; walls can enable infinites; odd main platform layout gives a disproportionate advantage to whoever controls the center of the stage
Skyward Voyage Banned Very tiny stage makes even 1-on-1 fights seem cramped; most transformations are similarly tiny or very obstructive, including one which has a wall that covers the entire right-hand boundary
Temple Banned Overly large; caves of life; greatly encourages circle camping; is near-impossible to KO anyone on this dang thing
Twilight Town Banned Overly large; excessive walls make horizontal KOs difficult; pit of death between buildings; cave of life inside the left-most building
World Tournament Banned Overly large; walk-off edges; no bottom boundary
Yoshi's Island Banned in back room list Very large platform-heavy stage encourages circle camping; pass-through main platform encourages sharking
Yoshi's Island (64) Banned Clouds promote inexcusably excessive camping; disproportionately large right blast line
