Air speed, or lateral air movement, is the rate at which a character can move horizontally while in midair in Super Smash Flash 2 and Fraymakers. Air speed, along with falling speed and gravity, is a major factor in how far a character can recover, as higher air speeds allow characters to travel more distance before landing.

Each character has a maximum air speed they are able to accelerate to by holding the left or right input. They will decelerate back to zero speed when not holding any input, the rate of which is known as aerial friction or air friction. In Fraymakers, aerial friction is also applied to return characters to their maximum air speeds when reaching higher speeds through momentum conservation, whereas in SSF2, characters can retain their aerial momentum for as long as the forward input is held with it active.

In SSF2, entering midair from the ground such as by jumping will conserve a portion of the character's grounded momentum for their air speed. The rate at which this is conserved is known as the ground-to-air modifier, also called the ground-to-air multiplier. This mechanic behaves differently in Fraymakers, in which characters conserve their full ground speeds before aerial friction takes effect.

In the original Super Smash Flash, characters' air movement stats share the same values as those for ground movement, meaning their air speeds are the same as their running speeds.
