Adivina La Película (meaning Guess The Movie in English), stylized as ¡Adivina la Película!, is an interactive quiz game developed in Flash and published by McLeodGaming. The game was created by Gregory McLeod and two of his classmates, Jen and Morgan, as a project for their Spanish class. As such, almost all of the game's text is in Spanish and players are tasked to play it exclusively in that language.

Gameplay[]

Pantalla de Adivina La Película

The main screen to select cards and tally points.

The game can be played with up to two competing teams of players, or it can be played with just one player. To play, a team chooses one of 30 cards, of which 24 are gray and 6 are gold. Each card contains a quote from a movie in Spanish and the name of the movie on the other side. The selecting team is tasked to read the quote and guess the name of the movie, earning points if the movie is guessed correctly. Gray cards are worth one point each, gold cards are worth five points each, and the point value is doubled if the movie is guessed correctly in Spanish. However, if the team gives up or guesses incorrectly, they will lose two points and the opposing team is allowed to answer instead, earning double the points if answered correctly but losing the card value's points if answered incorrectly. After a card is answered, the other team chooses the next card. The winning team is determined by whichever has the most points after all 30 cards have been answered to.

To keep track of which cards have already been answered to, players have the option to cover them with boxes containing red or green X's, with each color distinguishing which team guessed correctly. Players can also keep track of each team's points with a counter in the bottom left corner.

Translation errors[]

Because the game was created in little time by Gregory McLeod and his friends (none of whom are native-Spanish speakers), it presents several translation and grammatical errors in certain quotes and some movie titles.

Quotes[]

Quote More correct translation Notes
"E.T. llama al hogar." "E.T. llama a casa." N/A
"Yo creo que no estamos en Kansas nada más." "No creo que sigamos en Kansas." N/A
"Vas a morir en siete dias" "Morirás en siete días" The word "días" (days) is missing an acute accent.
"La fuerza esté contigo." "Que la fuerza te acompañe." While not entirely an error, this phrase is normally adapted as the latter ("May the force accompany you").
"Voy a regresar..." "Volveré..." N/A
"¡Soy un niño real ahora!" "¡Soy un niño de verdad!" N/A
"Hombre, ¿donde está mi coche?" "Amigo, ¿dónde está mi coche?" The word "dónde" (where) is missing an acute accent.
"A la infinidad y más allá" "Al infinito y más allá" N/A
"Tres deseos, ningunos substitutos, cambios, ni reintegra." "Tres deseos, no hay sustitutos, cambios ni devoluciones." This quote is actually incomplete; the full one reads: "Three wishes, to be exact. And ixnay on the wishing for more wishes. That's all. Three! Uno, dos, tres. No substitutions, exchanges or refunds." Oddly enough, it includes Spanish text, which may explain the omission of certain phrases.
"Yo voy a hacer a él no puede negarse." "Le haré una oferta que no podrá rechazar." For some reason, the words "una oferta" (an offer) are wrongfully missing in the card.
"Voy a necesitar un barco más grande..." "Vas a necesitar un barco más grande..." The original quote is "You're gonna need a bigger boat...", hence the error.
"Yo voy a matarte, mi chica bonita, y tu perro pequeño también." "Voy a atraparte linda, y a tu perrito también." The original quote does not include the word "matarte" (kill you) but rather "atraparte" (get you).
"En la selva vas a esperar, hasta que los dados digan cinco o ocho." "En la selva vas a esperar, hasta que en el dado salga cinco u ocho." The word "dado" (dice) is not pluralized in the original quote.
"¡Está viviendo! ¡Está viviendo!" "¡Está vivo! ¡Está vivo!" N/A
"Cuando tienes que disparar, dispare... no pienses." "Cuando tengas que disparar, ¡dispara! No hables." The original quote does not include the words "no pienses" (don't think) but rather "no hables" (don't talk).
"Era romance improbable, era un chico del campo. Ella era de la ciudad. Ella tuvo el mundo a sus pies, mientras él no tuvo diez centavos para usar." "Era un romance improbable. Él era un chico del campo. Ella era de la ciudad. Ella tenía al mundo a sus pies, mientras que él no tenía ni diez centavos para usar." N/A
"Un martini, sacudído, no batído..." "Un martini, agitado, no revuelto..." Aside the poor translation, there is an incorrect acute accent on "sacudido" and "batido".

Titles[]

Only a couple of movie titles are directly translated. It has to be noted, though, that certain titles are correctly translated in the cards despite the fact it may not correspond to the actual titles these movies received in Spanish-speaking territories (ex. The Ring is called El Aro in some countries and not "El Anillo" as the card reads).

Title More correct translation Notes
Hombre de Arañas El Hombre-Araña N/A
Dude, ¿donde está mi coche? Amigo, ¿dónde está mi coche? For some reason, the word Dude was left untranslated in the card.
El Titánico Titanic The name of the ship, and therefore the movie, is tropicalized exactly as its English name and is never translated.
Los Buenos, Los Malos y Los Feos El Bueno, el Malo y el Feo The original English title is not pluralized.
